WINTER WEATHER TIPS

Prepare your family for winter weather

  • Add the following supplies to your emergency kit: rock salt to melt on walkways, sand to improve traction, snow shovels and other snow-removal equipment, sufficient heating fuel and a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove, adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.

  • Because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, never use an electric generator indoors, inside the garage or near the air intake of your home.

  • Keep a week’s worth of non-perishable food on hand.

  • Keep a water supply. Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes break.

  • Bring pets inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.
